Here are the tips/tricks to maintain a virus free computer:

1. Browse with Caution Signs:- Most viruses enter your computer as a result of clicking on pop-ups or other links in websites that are not verified... Do not click on pop ups that could inject viruses on your computer...

2. Open Emails Cautiously:- Email is one of the common ways by which your computer can catch a virus. So, it is always recommended to stay away from SPAM. Open only those emails that has its origin from a trusted source such as those which comes from your contact list. E-mails can contain links that lead to a virus entering your computer.. If the email is not from a trusted source, treat it with caution...

3. Open Email Attachments with Care:- The attachment that the email urges you to open may contain a virus!! Make sure your mail manager allows you to preview the type of file (.exe, .com, .vbt in attachment are probably viruses) 

If you are using your own private email host (other than Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail etc.) then it is highly recommended that you use a good spam filter. 

4. Installing downloaded programs:- Programs downloaded from the Internet can pose a serious threat to your pc.. Make sure that the program you have downloaded is from a verified site or has a certificate issued by a trusted certifying authority...

As we all know, Internet is the main source of all malicious programs including viruses, worms, trojans etc. In fact, Internet contributes to virus infection by up to 80 percent. So, here are the tips for safe surfing habits so that you can ward off virus infection up to the maximum possible extent.
  • Do not click on pop-up windows that announce a sudden disaster in your city or announce that you’ve won an hourly prize or surveys. They are the ways to mislead Internet users and you should never trust them.You can also use a pop-up blocker to automatically block those pop-ups.

  • Most of us use search engines like Google to find what we are looking for.It is quite obvious for a malicious website to get listed in the search results.If there is HTTPS:// SECURE CONNECTION then it is save to download the files & another option to use AVG LinkScanner to check the website is save for download purposes.

  • While you download files from untrusted websites/sources such as torrents, surveys etc. make sure that you run a virus scan before executing them.

  • Never open any email attachments that come from untrusted sources. If it is a picture, text or sound file (these attachments end in the extensions .txt, .jpeg, .gif, .bmp, .tif, .mp3, .htm, .html, and .avi), you are probably safe, but still perform a virus scan before opening them.
5. Firewall:- There are several firewall software packages available that allow you to prevent unauthorized access to your computer that could be initiated by an infected system...

 A good antivirus package residing in your computer can be the best protection you can have against viruses... Choose an antivirus that can comprehensively defend itself against viruses...

7. Regular Virus Scan:- Scanning of your computer for viruses must be done on a regular basis to locate  viruses...

8. Update the Anti-Virus:- It is very important to update the antivirus program periodically. New viruses are introduced every day and the manufacturers of the antivirus software update the virus database regularly...

9. Update windows and all other software:- Do not forget to update the Operating System and other software regularly as they are frequently patched to overcome security loopholes and vulnerabilities.Set up your Windows update to automatically download patches and upgrades.
